About Us

Camilla, her dad, and this website

I'm Brantley, and this is my daughter Camilla. We're both very language-oriented people who love books. Her favorites, including Wings of Fire and Warriors, are usually fantasy series involving animals, especially dragons (thus the site logo). Recently she's progressed to more challenging fantasy and sci-fi series like The Bone Season and The Hunger Games. I love fantasy and sci-fi, too, but I also enjoy a broad range of other literary genres and forms. I'm pretty sure she will too someday.

I studied philosophy and Mandarin at Trinity University in my hometown, San Antonio, Texas. After a year abroad at Taiwan National Normal University's Mandarin Training Center, I graduated from Trinity in 1997. From 1998 to 2018, I worked as an English tutor in the San Francisco Bay Area's Chinese-American community, though most of my students have been native English speakers whose parents wanted them to get extra help with things like grammar, essay writing, SAT preparation, literary analysis, and college applications.

In 2008, Camilla sprang into being with enough personality to power a small city. Fortunately, she uses that power for good...mostly. She showed an early aptitude for reading and has remained a voracious reader, though she's also become a serious gamer, the fastest elementary school typist west of the Mississippi, an inveterate drawer of dragons, a swimmer, an ice skater, and an insufferably smug cat owner who insists on converting infidels to the cult of the cat. (Her cat is indeed magnificent, but I will never renounce my love of dogs.)

Since 2009 I've also worked in the China travel industry, along with my wife, a native of Shanghai. If you're interested in the Chinese language, Chinese culture, or traveling to China, check out my other website, The China Guru.

In 2018, we relocated to the San Antonio area, still one of my favorite places in the world. In 2021, I founded Prism Language Services to help expand my work into the fields of freelance proofreading and editing, translation, and college application consulting.
