How to use the adjective "superior" correctly

This is an entry on my list of Common Errors in English Usage. Visit the main page for direct links to additional entries.

The adjective superior implies a comparison, so it is logically redundant to use other comparative expressions like more and than in combination with it. Use only the preposition to:

their team is more superior than our team
their team is more superior to our team

their team is superior to our team
